Sun Kinks: One of our inspectors recently discovered this sun kink while inspecting a customer’s site in California. During multiple days of extreme heat – just as people can suffer heat stroke, heat exhaustion, or sunburn from too much exposure to hot temperatures and sunlight – rail can warp or bend. Occasionally, the tracks expand so far out of their normal gage that crossties and ballast no longer are able to provide the structural support needed, which lead to a derailment.
